Illinois’ Longest-Running County Fair is Back

By: Forgottonia Times™ Report

For nearly two centuries, the Knox County Fair has been a summertime staple in west-central Illinois—and it’s back this July 8 through July 12 with its hallmark blend of old-fashioned charm and high-energy entertainment.

Held at the Knox County Fairgrounds at 1392 Knox Hwy. 9 in Knoxville, the fair proudly claims the title of the longest continuously running county fair in Illinois. While agricultural competitions began here as early as 1839, the fair officially received its state charter in 1851 under the name "Knoxville Fair." Since then, it has grown from showy vegetables and fast horses into a full-blown community celebration.

Admission remains refreshingly affordable: just $3 at the gate (kids 42” and under get in free), and parking won’t cost you a dime. Note that all bags must be clear or small enough to fit in a hand—check the fair’s website for specifics.

Grandstand events span the week, starting Tuesday, July 8, with the free-to-watch Harness Races at 5 p.m. On Wednesday, engines rev up at 6 p.m. for Backroad Pullers with Illiana Mini Rods and ITPA Garden Tractors ($10 adults, $5 kids).

Thursday’s big-ticket draw: country music legends Clint Black and Diamond Rio take the stage at 7 p.m. Gates open at 5. Advance tickets range from $39 for grandstand seating to $49 for the “Holding Pen” (no chairs allowed). Prices rise by $10 day-of, so plan ahead.

Friday’s Figure 8 racing and Saturday’s Demolition Derby round out the adrenaline with youth Power Wheels events at 6 p.m. and main events at 6:30 p.m. each night. Adult tickets are $10, kids’ admission is $5, and pit passes are $20.

The fair’s midway will be alive all week thanks to Boden Amusements, with $25 armbands and ticket deals ($3 per ticket/ride or 10 tickets for $27).

Whether you come for the horses, horsepower, or hotdogs, the Knox County Fair continues to deliver summer fun with a nostalgic feel. For tickets, schedule updates, and bag policies, visit the fair’s official website or follow the Knox County Fair Facebook page.
